Best Home Window Repair Guide
I have written a lot about home window repair but today I want to provide quick but useful guidelines information on how to prepare for a new window glass, how to install the glass and how to finish the window repair. How To Prepare For A New Window Glass Let me start by pointing out that if the windowpane is large then you must remove the whole window frame, place it on a flat area before removing the broken glass or attempting to install the new glass. Then remove the broken glass. Be very careful here, broken glass can be very harmful. The best way to protect yourself from any harm is to wear some work gloves. Simply pull one broken piece out at a time. You should also remove the old putty to make the frame ready for a new glass. Installing the new glass Just insert the replacement glass in the frame. You may need to cut it to size, with a glass cutter, if it does not fit well. The new page must be about a fraction of an inch smaller than the area of the window it is to fill. Press the window pane down firmly while you insert it into the frame. Keep holding the pane in position while glazing on each side in order to lock the pane into place. Just make these glazier's points (about 4 inches apart) that requires small amount of pressure to be inserted. You may need to apply a coat of linseed oil to all section of the wood around the frame. After allowing the oil to soak in you can then apply a thin layer of putty. Apply it around the frame the new glass will be inserted. Knead the putty and apply it onto the window the smooth it out with a scraper or knife. Some finishing tips - painting - Make sure you have read the label on the putty before applying any paint on it. - You may need to use two coats of outside paint to make a really great finish - If some of the paint covers parts of the glass then use a razor blade scraper to remove it. What's the worst that can happen while doing this? ???? You can cut yourself with the broken glass ???? Putty can be too stiff and very hard to apply effectively ???? you may split the wood frame on the window while trying to remove the putty ???? When installing the new glass the putty can soak out and dry out quickly ???? There can be a leakage of air around the glass ???? You can gouge the putty while trying to remove the paint from the glass One thing I must mention in this home window repair guide is that doing this job requires a certain amount of skill and some attention. It is easy to simply mess it up and have the window leaking. This is why I always advocate for the use of trained professionals. There are a number of contractor within your area who can do a great job at a much cheaper price. In fact I know a lot of them that are willing to offer an obligation free in-home consultation.
